Constructive vs. Destructive

"Criticism by me is constructive. Criticism of me is destructive."

Reading around on Deviant Art (and especially some comments people leave on MY work), it's starting to get a little ridiculous how much unsolicited criticism there is floating around of people's art. And the sad thing is that most of it is not constructive.

Constructive criticism is a compassionate attitude towards the person qualified for criticism. Having higher experience, gifts, respect, knowledge in specific field and being able to verbally convince at the same time, this person is intending to uplift the other person materially, morally, emotionally or spiritually.

How many people do you think actually are intent on uplifting the subject of their criticism? Or better yet, how many of the people leaving said criticism are actually qualified to do so? How many times have you had no-name people leave "you didn't do this right" comments on your deviation just to follow the link to their profile and see that they either a) draw stick figures or b) have absolutely no deviations at all (and their favourites are full of "artistic nudes")?

Destructive criticism is intended to harm someone, derogate and destroy someone’s creation, prestige, reputation and self-esteem on whatever level it might be. This may be done intentionally or out of sheer ignorance and foolishness. Hence the word destructive is used. In practical life destructive criticism may be disguised as constructive. Often destructive criticism comes from persons who are envious, cruel and those who judge in fields which are not their own.

"Those who judge in fields which are not their own" would definitely apply to those particular individuals with the nudes or stick figures. They may "mean well" when they "critique" your work, but they are doing more harm than good. Anyone trying to critique anything they are not an authority on can't possibly be doing any good. Just stick to pointing out the things you like.

Conclusion?
Don't sit there spouting off "critique" of other artists unless:
a) You know what the hell you're talking about.
b) The artist specifically asks for critique.
c) You make damn well sure your criticism is constructive, not destructive.

And now, a note to the DA Troll:
I'm sick of you little bitches running around people's DA and leaving your "helpful" shit everywhere. You nitpick someone's drawing and completely demolish it with your little "this is wrong" and "that is wrong" bullshit. And what do you do to make the person feel even the tiniest ounce better about the work you just spat on? "Oh, everything else is cute." What the hell does that even mean? Everything else is cute? You had a million specific examples to pull out for why it sucks, but you can't even think of one UN-GENERALIZED example for why it DOESN'T suck?

Either use constructive criticism on my works (and those of my friends), or GTFO my DA.

Got it?

Please check your gallery and make sure that your works do not violate these. I don't think that WoW screenshots are allowed.
Anyways, Have a nice day!

:iconsenny:
If WoW screenshots aren't allowed, then half of my friend list is FUCKED. Might want to paste this friendly warning to them as well, thanks. But for now I will not be removing them. I worked hard on them, and there is a HUGE base on DA for editing WoW screenshots with the help of model viewer. And the works are really work. It's photomanipulation, you should check it out sometime. ;)
:iconstuck-in-suburbia:
I think you should check out the definition of photomanipulation. Photomanipulation is where you manipulate stock photos, photos where the photographer has given permission for use, and edit it to portray emotion or a message. In photomanipulation, you are supposed to use photos of things in real life.
Sure, there's a huge base, but I'm pretty sure the mafia's huge as well, and I think they do some illegal stuff.
